STORM HISTORY IN SAN MARCOS
The storm San Marcos homeowners still talk about came through on the evening of May 9, 2024. National Weather Service storm reports logged tennis-ball hail — 2.5 inches — near the outlets at 8:29 PM, and hen-egg hail south and east of town minutes later, with home windows broken and a solar panel destroyed by hail driven sideways on the wind. The City reported downed trees, power lines and traffic-signal outages, closed the Purgatory Creek and Spring Lake natural areas because of fallen trees, and SMTX Utilities worked outages into the next day. The Hays County emergency manager reported lines and trees down on roadways from Wimberley to San Marcos, and the county issued a disaster declaration. A month earlier, on April 2, 2024, Texas State emergency management measured one-inch hail on the southwest side of town. Hail that size is enough to bruise an asphalt shingle roof without showing anything from the driveway.

San Marcos has two very different roof populations.
