STORM HISTORY IN ROUND ROCK
Round Rock sits in the part of Williamson County that takes the worst of Central Texas hail. On September 24, 2023, a supercell dropped hail estimated up to softball size (roughly 4 inches) across Round Rock and north Austin. It remains the costliest hailstorm in Austin-area history: about $600 million in insured losses across Travis and Williamson counties, with roughly $300 million of that in Williamson County alone. One Round Rock car dealership alone reported more than 750 damaged vehicles. The National Weather Service logged another very large hail and high wind event on May 9, 2024. If your roof was installed before September 2023 and has not been inspected since, it has very likely been through at least one impact event that a homeowner cannot see from the ground.
ROUND ROCK HOMES & WHAT THEY MEAN FOR YOUR ROOF
Round Rock grew in distinct waves, and each one left a different roof behind. Brushy Creek and the older sections near downtown carry the earliest housing, much of it re-roofed at least once already. Forest Creek filled in through the 1990s. Teravista and Paloma Lake are 2000s master-planned build-outs, which matters more than it sounds: a builder-grade three-tab or early architectural shingle installed during that boom is now at or past the end of its service life, and it went through the 2023 storm at 15 to 20 years old. Aging shingles lose granules and become brittle, so the same hailstone that dents a five-year-old roof can fracture the mat on a twenty-year-old one. PERMITS & LOCAL CODE IN ROUND ROCK
Round Rock is more straightforward than most of the metro: the City does not require a permit for a residential re-roof. If the work modifies the roof structure rather than replacing the covering, that becomes a residential remodel permit. One local code requirement is worth knowing because it is a common shortcut on cheap bids: Round Rock requires drip edge per the 2015 IBC, Section R905.2.8.5.
