Hail larger than baseballs fell across the county, one stone was measured at 6.25 inches — among the largest ever recorded in the state — and County Judge Ruben Becerra signed a disaster declaration to bring in additional resources. Homes and businesses had windows blown out, and more than 13,000 customers lost power in San Marcos alone. Dripping Springs sits in the hill-country western half of that county, and the largest stones on May 9, 2024 fell along the corridor running from Johnson City east through much of Hays County — which is essentially the line Dripping Springs sits on. Hill-country terrain tends to sustain these storms rather than break them apart, and the wind loading on exposed ridge lots compounds the impact damage.
