7 Signs of Hail Damage on Your Roof

Hail damage isn't always obvious. In fact, some of the most serious damage is invisible from the ground. Here are seven signs that your roof may have been damaged by hail.

  1. Dented or damaged gutters and downspouts. These are often the first visible sign of hail impact. If your gutters are dented, your roof likely took hits too.
  1. Granule loss on shingles. Hail knocks the protective granules off shingles, exposing the underlying material. Look for bare spots or excessive granules in your gutters.
  1. Circular cracks or bruises on shingles. Hail creates distinctive circular damage patterns. The shingle may feel soft or spongy where it was hit.
  1. Dents on metal components. Check your roof vents, flashing, and any exposed metal. Hail dents in metal are easy to spot and indicate significant impact.
  1. Cracked or broken shingles. Larger hail can crack shingles outright. Look for any shingles that appear split or broken.
  1. Exposed or damaged underlayment. If hail was severe enough to penetrate shingles, you may see the underlying felt or synthetic material.
  1. Interior water stains or leaks. Sometimes the first sign of roof damage is water appearing inside your home after a storm.

If you notice any of these signs, schedule a professional inspection. Many types of hail damage are difficult to assess without walking on the roof.
