Year-Round Roof Maintenance Tips for Texas Homes

Your roof is your home's first line of defense against Texas weather. A little maintenance goes a long way in preventing expensive repairs and extending your roof's lifespan.

Spring (March-May): After winter, inspect your roof for any damage from cold snaps or early storms. Clear debris from gutters and downspouts. Check for loose or missing shingles. Trim tree branches that hang over your roof—they can cause damage in storms and drop debris that traps moisture.

Summer (June-August): Texas heat takes a toll on roofing materials. Look for signs of heat damage like curling or buckling shingles. Check attic ventilation—proper airflow reduces heat buildup that can age your roof prematurely. Make sure soffit vents are clear of insulation or debris.

Fall (September-November): Clean gutters before heavy rain season. Check flashing around chimneys, vents, and skylights for gaps or deterioration. Inspect caulking and sealants—the summer heat can cause them to crack.

Winter (December-February): While Texas winters are mild, occasional ice storms can cause damage. Check for ice dams after freezing weather. Look for water stains on interior ceilings that might indicate a slow leak.

Year-round tips: Never pressure wash your roof—it strips protective granules from shingles. Walk your property after any significant storm and look up. Keep an eye on your energy bills—a sudden increase could mean your roof insulation has been compromised.

Schedule a professional inspection at least once a year, ideally before hail season in spring. A trained inspector can catch problems early, before they become expensive emergencies.
